ABOUT

What can surfing teach us about navigating our middle and later years?

These are stories from surfers in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond …

Some of them have just taken up surfing, some have been surfing for half a century.

I’ve asked surfers to reflect on the big questions they’re facing at their age, what role surfing plays in their lives, and whether there are any connections between the two.

I’ve found the connections both universal and unique — lots of common themes have come up (letting go of control, finding pleasure in others’ successes, maintaining a beginner’s mind, tuning in with changing bodies, connecting with awe and with nature and mortality) but each person’s story is particular.

About me

My name is Rob Baedeker. I am a 53-year-old father, husband, surfer, writer, former sketch comedian and performer, and current communication consultant and coach. I have surfed on and off since I was about 12 years old and reconnected with regular surfing about 10 years ago in the San Francisco Bay Area. I’ve found that surfing has become central to my physical, mental and even spiritual well being as I’ve gotten older and, inspired in part by the Modern Elder Academy, I’ve become curious what kinds of wisdom wave-riding has offered for others in midlife.
